Your role
Atlas Copco Vacuum Technique is seeking an experienced Technologist to join our Vacuum Technique Technology Group. This role is ideal for a subject matter expert who is motivated by identifying, developing and demonstrating innovative technologies that can strengthen future vacuum and abatement products and their applications.
About the Role
You will initiate and deliver new technology projects and technical investigations, turning ideas into well-evidenced technology recommendations. Working across engineering and science disciplines, you will research emerging approaches, develop analytical and experimental methods, create proof-of-concept demonstrators, and assess whether technologies are sufficiently understood and sufficiently low risk to progress into product development, customer applications or production solutions. You will also share knowledge across the business and build effective links with internal specialists, external partners, suppliers and academia.
Key Responsibilities
· Initiate innovative technology solutions that advance vacuum and abatement products and their application capability
· Define, plan and deliver complex technology investigations and demonstrator projects to agreed scope, resources, risks, timescales and costs
· Generate robust evidence through analysis, modelling, experiments and testing, documenting strengths, weaknesses and deployment limits
· Develop proof-of-concept demonstrators, design rules, calculations, specifications, engineering models, sketches, drawings and detailed test reports as appropriate
· Apply and promote rigorous problem-solving, experimental, analytical and design-modelling methods across the wider technical community
· Monitor the state of the art through technical papers, literature, patents and internal and external networks, identifying knowledge that can create value for the business
· Assess technology maturity and risk, making clear recommendations on readiness for product development, customer application or production use
· Act as a subject matter expert, providing technical direction, influencing project teams and building links with peers and external parties
· Disseminate findings through credible reports, papers and presentations to strengthen knowledge and innovation within the New Technology Validation groups and the wider business
· Put safety, sustainability, integrity and accountability at the centre of technology project delivery
To succeed, you will need
We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every single requirement. We value diverse experiences and perspectives and are excited to see what you bring to the role.
· Degree, Masters or Doctorate in a relevant engineering or science discipline, or equivalent experience
· At least 10 years of relevant experience, including three years in a senior role, within industry or research associated with product creation and development
· Significant practical experience of relevant design, experimental and investigative techniques in laboratory and real-world environments
· Advanced engineering or science theory and practice, with recognised subject matter expertise in a core technology area
· Ability to research unfamiliar engineering and technology areas and make informed decisions that guide design, development and research projects
· Ability to define, plan and deliver complex projects to agreed metrics, with clear design rules, parameters and supporting documentation
· A proven record of generating innovative designs, methods or technologies, including intellectual property
· Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and technologies, together with awareness of customer, competitor and third-party technology landscapes
· Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with accuracy and precision in engineering outcomes and appropriate peer review of key decisions
· Ability to build relationships, influence teams and provide credible technical direction across the wider business and with external parties
· Clear and effective written and verbal communication, including reports, technical papers and presentations for different levels of the business
· Proficiency in standard office software and willingness to travel as required, with approximately 10% anticipated
